Description
Surfactant Protein D is a Ca2+ dependent carbohydrate binding protein with a structure similar to other C-type mammalian lectins. Its molecular weight is 620kD under non-reducing conditions and 43kD under reducing conditions. SP-D enhances the production of oxygen radicals in alveolar macrophages and regulates some actions of SP-A. SP-D is a lung surfactant associated collectin that has been implicated in the innate pulmonary host defense against a wide variety of important bacterial, fungal and viral pathogens
